Kevin Mathews to Join Hoosiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana baseball coach Bob Morgan has announced that Kevin Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) has signed a letter-of-intent to continue his baseball career at IU, beginning in the fall of 2004. Mathews becomes the 11th member of the incoming class.
Outfield Pittsburg, Pa. Upper St. Clair
Mathews is a three-year baseball letterman under head coach Jerry Malarky at Upper St. Clair. He registered a .531 batting average as a junior in 2003, and was selected his team MVP. Mathews garnered All-Section and first-team All-State honors as well. He broke the school record 25-game hitting streak that was previously held by former Hoosier and Major Leaguer Kevin Orie, and swiped 22 stolen bases in 22 attempts. An outstanding prep football player, Mathews lettered three years and, in addition to earning team MVP honors, was named All-State and Big 33. He earned Area Player of the Year honors as well.
Coach Morgan on Kevin Mathews:
"Kevin is a very good athlete. He was an outstanding high school football player, and thought about signing a football scholarship. He possess excellent speed, and could be a great leadoff hitter in college. His overall athleticism is impressive, and as he adapts to concentrating on one sport, I think he'll really get better."
Kevin Mathews on Choosing IU:
"I like the program, the campus and the coaching staff. I want to play at a higher level of baseball, and want my next four years to be at Indiana."
