Mahar Signs With Rangers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana senior Kevin Mahar has signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers organization. Mahar just concluded his fifth and final season at IU, which allowed him to sign a deal as a free agent prior to the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.
"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to continue to play," Mahar said. "This has been my goal since I started playing baseball, and I am ready to get started."
Mahar departs Thursday for a week in extended spring ball in Peoria, Ariz. From there, he will join the Rangers' single-A team, the Spokane (Wash.) Indians.
Mahar was awarded second-team All-Big Ten honors as an outfielder in 2004. He led all Big Ten Conference hitters with 14 home runs and a .652 slugging percentage this season. The Midland, Mich., native batted .359 overall and .368 in Big Ten games, both of which rank eighth among league players. Mahar drove in 52 RBI, the third-most in the Big Ten, and stole eight bases in 10 attempts. He also racked up 20 multiple-hit games and 15 multiple-RBI games.
Mahar is the second Hoosier in the past week to sign with a MLB organization as shortstop Seth Bynum inked a deal with the Montreal Expos.
