Schutz Earns All-Regional Honors
June 2, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Redshirt sophomore left fielder Kipp Schutz was named to the All-Louisville Regional Team, it was announced today. Schutz was the Hoosiers' standout performer at the regional, going 5-for-7 in Indiana's two games at the NCAA Tournament.
Schutz' red-hot finish led him to the team lead with a .392 batting average. He finished third in the Big Ten with that mark, as he helped Indiana to win 25 of its final 37 games of the 2009 season. The Evansville, Ind., native was also named a First Team All-Big Ten selection and earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Big Ten Tournament as well.
Over the final 44 games of the season, Schutz went 56-for-128 (.438 average) with 28 runs and 25 RBI. He also hit six doubles and three home runs over that span, and with 14 walks posted a .490 on-base percentage.
His season got off to a slow start, as he spent most of the offseason playing for the Indiana men's basketball team and then had to recover from an appendectomy just before the baseball season began. His late-season surge upped his average 109 points over the final two months of the year.
Indiana concluded its 2009 campaign at 32-27 after winning its first Big Ten Tournament championship since 1996. With a 16-7 conference record, IU finished with its best Big Ten winning percentage since 1939.
