Four Commit to IU for 2004

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Four high school players have announced their intention to attend Indiana University and play baseball next fall. Kyle Exline (Indianapolis/Southport HS), George Burnham (Franklin, Ind./Franklin HS), Trevor Hines (Indianapolis/Westfield HS) and Neil Carr (Evansville/Reitz HS) will join head coach Bob Morgan's program for the 2004 season.

    "All four of these players have a great upside to them and we feel they will be contributors to Indiana University, both academically and athletically," Morgan said. "They have been very successful high school players and should be able to make the transition to the college level."

    A three-year letterwinner at Southport High School ... Garnered first-team All-Marion County by the Coaches in 2002 ... first-team South Star pick by the Indianapolis Star in 2002 ... Named a preseason All-State selection by Hoosier Diamond ... An Indiana Junior Showcase Invitee ... Helped Southport to a Sectional Championship and a Regionial Runner-up finish in 2002 ... Pitched 23.2 innings in the 2002 State Tournament and allowed only one earned run ... A Kiwanis Scholarship Award winner.

    "I am excited about the opportunity to play for Coach Morgan and his staff and to compete in the Big Ten, a major Division I conference. Academically, I have an interest in studying law, and IU will provide me with that opportunity."

    Lettered as a junior and senior at Westfield ... Named the team MVP last season ... Also an All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference selection ... Seven of his eight pitching appearances resulted in complete games ... Compiled a 1.45 ERA and a 1-7 record ... Coached by Ryan Bunnell at Westfield ... Played as a freshman and sophomore at Illinois Valley Central High School in Chillicothe, Ill. ... Competed for the Indiana Mustangs summer team.

    Lettered three seasons in baseball at Reitz HS ... Also played varsity football ... Maintained a 3.0 grade point average ... Parents are Bruce and Lynn Carr.

    George Burnham • Catcher • Franklin, Ind. •Franklin HS
    A four-year letterwinner at Franklin High School ... Hit .430 as a senior ... Threw out nearly 80 percent of base runners from behind the plate ... Also played soccer in high school ... Parents are Rose Burnham and George Burnham.

    Burnham on Choosing IU:
    "I am always looking to better myself in my academics as well as my athletics. I believe that at Indiana I will be pushed to strive high as an athlete and as a person so that I will be the best I can possibly be."
