DeMuth, DeNato Named Freshmen All-Americans by Louisville Slugger
June 8, 2011
This marks the fourth consecutive season Head Coach Tracy Smith has had a freshman earn the national accolade; and first time IU has ever had multiple Freshman All-Americans in the same year.
DeMuth manned the hot corner for the majority of the 2011 campaign, supplying a rocket arm from the left side of the infield. From the leadoff spot, DeMuth batted .360 with 12 doubles, two triples, and 23 RBI. His 85 hits were the second most in the Big Ten, regardless of class. The Big Ten All-Freshman Team member was a terror on the base paths as well, scoring a team-high 43 runs, stealing eight bases and recording an impressive 20 infield hits.
DeNato, meanwhile, was one of three starting pitchers voted to the All-Big Ten First Team; and the only freshman to make the 13-member squad. He made 15 appearances on the mound, including nine starts. The San Diego, Calif., native posted a 2.80 ERA and 7-3 record en route to becoming the Hoosiers' Friday night starter by season's end. His lightning-quick pick off move pegged 12 runners at first base, the most in the conference by a long shot. The next closest TEAM had 13 runners picked off.
