DeNato, Kelzer Chosen in Final Day of MLB Draft

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On the final day of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Indiana pitchers Joey DeNato and Jake Kelzer were selected. DeNato was a 19th round selection (562 overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies and Kelzer was a 22nd round pick (662 overall) by the New York Yankees.
DeNato, IU's all-time career leader in wins (37), strikeouts (297) and innings pitched (369.1), turned in the best season of his career as a senior in 2014. The San Diego, Calif., native was 13-1 with a 1.82 ERA and led the team with 81 strikeouts. He set Indiana single season records in innings pitched (109.1) and wins.
Kelzer, a redshirt freshman from Bloomington, Ind., made 25 appearances for the Hoosiers in 2014. He had 44 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched and finished the year with 3.13 ERA.
Indiana had five players taken in this year's MLB Draft. Along with DeNato and Kelzer, Kyle Schwarber (fourth overall, Chicago Cubs), Sam Travis (67th overall, Boston Red Sox) and Dustin DeMuth (146th overall, Milwaukee Brewers) were also drafted. It was the most Hoosiers chosen in the same draft since 2009.
