Hoosier Baseballers in Summer Leagues
June 22, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over a dozen members of the Indiana baseball team are currently taking part in summer collegiate leagues around the country, from San Diego to Maine. Most summer leagues kick off right at the end of the collegiate season and run through the end of July or early August. Here is a brief look at how the Hoosiers are faring on their respective summer teams.
Three Hoosiers are currently playing in the Cape Cod League, regarded as the top collegiate summer baseball league in the country. Rising sophomores Blake Monar and Alex Dickerson are playing for the Wareham Gatemen. Dickerson has played all eight games and leads the team with four RBI in the wood bat league, posting a .241 average so far. Monar has pitched twice, surrendering just nine hits in 10 2/3 innings, but has an 0-1 record. Rising senior Jake Dunning is also playing for the Hyannis Mets in the Cape, and has allowed two hits in two appearances on the mound.
In the Midwest-based Great Lakes League, pitcher Joey O'Gara has been solid so far for the Cincinnati Steam, going 2-0 in his two starts. He has allowed just five hits in his nine innings of work, posting eight strikeouts. For the Grand Lake Mariners, the trio of Michael Earley, Brian Lambert and Tyler Rogers have opened the season well. Lambert is hitting .333 with the team's only home run, while Earley has a .316 average and a team-high three doubles. Rogers has Grand Lake's only triple in his five starts.
In the Northeast, Drew Leininger and Ethan Wilson are both playing for the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate League. Leininger is 2-0 in his four appearances out of the bullpen, allowing just three hits in his 7 2/3 innings. Wilson has tallied five hits and scored three runs in his 10 starts. In the New York Collegiate League, Dylan Swift has played in five games for the Albany Dutchmen. He has a pair of hits and has shown off his arm, nabbing four of the nine men who have tried to steal on him this summer.
Two Hoosiers traveled to the upper Midwest's Northwoods League this summer, as Jerrud Sabourin is playing for the Madison Mallards and Josh Lyon is with the Waterloo Bucks. Sabourin has a .296 average and one home run on the year and has also stolen a pair of bases. Lyon has hit three doubles and a homer for the Bucks, driving in five runs on the season.
On the West Coast, Marshall Gorham and Wyatt Hoff are playing for the San Diego Waves, while Kyle Leiendecker is with the San Diego Mavericks. In four appearances, Hoff has a 2.31 ERA and has struck out 10 in 11 2/3 innings. Gorham has also made four appearances and has a 4.27 ERA for the Waves. In the Southeast-based Pioneer League, Sterling Mack is 1-for-1 on the basepaths in limited action for the Covington Lumberjacks.
