Hoosiers Add Righty to 2009 Class
July 1, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team has added a righthanded pitcher to its incoming 2009 class, as Alex Herz (Boulder, Colo.) signed on to join the Hoosiers, head coach Tracy Smith announced today. The 6-foot-7 hurler will come to Bloomington after a solid senior campaign at Boulder High School.
"Alex is going to be fun to work with in our program," head coach Tracy Smith said. "He is a smart kid with a solid work ethic. You take those ingredients and match them with a projectable body, and the sky is the limit for a pitcher like him. We are very much looking forward to Alex wearing the Hoosier uniform."
Herz was the team MVP for Boulder in 2009 as he led the team to the state playoffs for the first time in five years. On the mound, Herz went 2-1 with a 2.32 ERA, a .216 batting average against and over a strikeout per inning. He also was a standout at the plate, hitting .439 with four home runs on the year.
Herz, who also served as team captain for Boulder, was named first team all-region and earned a spot in the league all-star game. The righthander played four years of baseball at Boulder, earning two letters, and also played three years of basketball for the Panthers.
Herz is undecided as to his major at Indiana. He has a twin brother, Max, and a sister, Isabelle. The son of Leslie and Dave Herz was born on April 19, 1991.
