Baseball America Names Dickerson Freshman All-American
July 3, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Designated hitter Alex Dickerson has been named a Second Team Freshman All-American, Baseball America announced. Dickerson, who earlier collected Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National College Baseball Writers Association, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a second team all-conference choice this season.
The Poway, Calif., native is the second freshman in as many years to pick up All-America recognition for the Hoosiers. Fellow San Diego area native Jerrud Sabourin was named a Freshman All-American a year ago.
Dickerson, who became the first Hoosier to take home Freshman of the Year laurels, led all Big Ten freshmen with his 14 home runs and 57 RBI, his 14 longballs setting a new Indiana freshman record and his 57 driven in falling one short of the IU rookie mark. The left-handed hitting Dickerson finished eighth in the conference with a .370 average in his debut season for the Hoosiers, where he hit in the cleanup spot for 57 out of IU's 59 games.
His .618 slugging percentage (sixth), 57 RBI (eighth), 15 doubles (tied for seventh), 147 total bases (second) and 88 hits (third) were all among the conference's top 10. He led all conference freshmen in batting average, home runs, RBI, hits and total bases.
Dickerson, along with fellow IU freshman Blake Monar, is playing this summer with the Wareham Gatemen of the famed Cape Cod Baseball League, considered the top summer collegiate league in the nation. Dickerson has five RBI in 12 games, the second highest total on the team.
