July 5, 2011
CHICAGO, Ill. - Chris Sujka, a soon-to-be-freshman on the Indiana Baseball squad, was selected as the 2011 Illinois Male Athlete of the Year this week by the Northwest Indiana Times.
The Times has been giving out this award annually since 1956 with a long list of previous selections becoming big-time athletes, including fellow Hoosiers Antwaan Randle El and Quinn Buckner, as well as Donovan McNabb.
Sujka led the Mount Carmel Caravan to the state finals in both football and baseball, finishing runner-up and fourth place, respectively. As the quarterback, Sujka ran for 1,406 yards and 30 touchdowns, and augmented that production with 847 passing yards. On the diamond, he stroked a school-record 12 homers; and batted .389 with 41 RBIs, nine doubles and three triples.
