Rogers Signs With Gateway Grizzlies
July 29, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Graduated senior Tyler Rogers has signed a professional contract with the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League, the team announced. Rogers won three letters for the Hoosiers after playing his freshman season at Ball State.
Rogers, who played both second base and centerfield in 2010, wrapped up his career in style by taking home third team All-Big Ten honors at second base. The Lafayette, Ind., native hit .427 in conference play, second in the Big Ten, and added 24 RBI to place eighth in the league.
Overall, he finished his final campaign with a .377 average, a team-best five triples and a 10-for-14 mark in steals. He added three home runs and scored 30 runs on the season, but his most memorable feat came while patrolling centerfield. In the Big Ten Tournament opener against Northwestern, he stole extra bases from NU's Chris Kontos with a diving grab that clocked in at No. 1 on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays that evening.
Rogers hit over .300 in all three of his seasons for Indiana, including a .316 mark in 2008 and a .314 average in 2009. For his career, he finished with 168 hits, nine triples, 11 home runs and 25 steals in an IU uniform. He also scored 98 runs in his three years for the Hoosiers.
Rogers joins fellow seniors Michael Earley (White Sox) and Chris Squires (Marlins) along with underclassman Ethan Wilson (White Sox) in signing professional contracts this offseason. For the latest list of IU baseball alums in the professional ranks, click here.
