    Fans Vote Alex Dickerson as the Premier Player of College Baseball

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - College sports fans voted Alex Dickerson the recipient of The 2011 Premier Player of College Baseball trophy. This season marked the first for the national fan-voted accolade.

    Dickerson, who is currently playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates Single-A affiliate, became the first recipient of the Premier Player of College Baseball trophy. Other candidates for the award included Danny Hultzen, LHP/1B/OF, Virginia Cavaliers; John Stilson, RHP, Texas A&M Aggies; Mike McGee, RHP/OF, Florida State Seminoles; and Sonny Gray, RHP, Vanderbilt Commodores.

    The All-American led IU in batting average (.367), homeruns (9), RBI (49), slugging percentage (.540) and on-base percentage (.440). The 2010 Big Ten Triple Crown winner made a run at repeating the feat, finishing in the top-five for average, homeruns and RBI in '11.

    The Premier Player of College Baseball trophy is one of four major awards presented by the Premier Players Sports Foundation based on the votes of fans. Future plans have the baseball/softball awards being presented annually in Atlanta each summer during a charitable awards dinner that benefits children's nonprofits in the area. Other events include the Premier Player of College Football charitable awards dinner, held annually in Tampa, FL, the weekend after the BCS national championship game; the Premier Player of College Basketball charitable awards dinner held annually in Charlotte, NC, each April; and the Premier Player of College Hockey charitable award dinner also held in April in Boston, MA. Proceeds from each event benefits children's charities in their respective cities.
