Nov. 5, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Juniors Josh Phegley and Matt Bashore of the Indiana baseball team have both been ranked among the top 50 college prospects for the 2009 MLB Draft by Baseball America, the publication announced today.
Baseball America annually ranks the top 100 college prospects for the upcoming Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Phegley was ranked 32nd in the nation among college prospects who will be eligible for the 2009 draft, while Bashore clocked in 45th.
Phegley was the top ranked catcher on the list, while Bashore was ninth among left-handed pitchers. The two Hoosiers were the only Big Ten players ranked in the top 50. The lone other representative of the conference was Minnesota outfielder Eric Decker, who was ranked 91st.
Phegley, who collected All-America honors from the National College Baseball Writers of America, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2008, finished off one of the best offensive seasons in IU history with a .438 average, 15 home runs, 80 RBI and 20 doubles.
Bashore, a first team All-Big Ten honoree, was the top pitcher on the Hoosier staff, going 7-3 with a 3.59 ERA during 2008. He led the conference with 86 strikeouts, tied for fifth on IU's all-time list.
Indiana opens the 2008 season against West Virginia in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
