Bloomington, IND. -- Indiana University baseball player Vasili Spanos has been named a preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the organization announced recently. Spanos, a senior, is a third-team selection and is one of only three players from the Big Ten Conference on the list.
A three-year starter at first base for the Hoosiers, Spanos is coming off an outstanding season in 2002. He earned first-team All-Big Ten laurels after hitting .385 with 16 home runs and 65 runs batted. He also posted a .782 slugging percentage, which ranks third all-time at IU, on his way to first-team All-Mideast Region and third-team All-America (American Baseball Coaches Association) honors. Over the summer, the River Forest, Ill., product was selected an All-Star in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
In addition to Spanos, a pair of pitchers from the Big Ten, Tim Day of Michigan State and Scott Lewis of Ohio State, are on the third team. Spanos is one of a total of five third baseman named by the NCBWA.
