Baseball Signee Downing Named Finalist for Kentucky Mr. Football

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana baseball signee Ty Downing (Bowling Green, Ky.) has been named one of 18 candidates for Kentucky's Mr. Football Award, it was announced. Downing is the first player from Greenwood High School to be nominated for the honor.
Downing quarterbacked Greenwood to a 10-4 season in his senior campaign. He threw for 2,278 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season and also rushed for 260 yards and seven scores on the ground.
In baseball, Downing, who will join the IU program in the fall of 2010 as a catcher, hit .367 as a junior with seven doubles, three triples and three home runs for a .592 slugging percentage. He also was a standout defensively, posting a .988 fielding percentage and catching six out of 14 runners who tried to steal on him. He earned all-state and all-district honors for his efforts and was chosen for the Junior East/West All-Star Team.
Downing was one of nine signees in the 2010 class, joined by Blair Betts (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive), Matt Dearden (Newberry, Fla./Gainesville), Dustin DeMuth (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte), Joey DeNato (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines), Eric Kartman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), Brian Korte (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Chad Martin (Lexington, Ky./Vincennes University) and Reed Reznicek (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista).
