Adams came to IU after serving two years as a student assistant at the University of Tennessee. Prior to his time in Knoxville, Adams played one year at Iowa under Steve Alford, where current Hoosier assistant coach Tim Buckley also was on the staff. He also has coached on the AAU level for the Indiana Elite program.

Adams is a 2004 graduate of Bloomington High School South, where he spent three years playing for head coach J.R. Holmes. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports management from Tennessee in 2009.
