Tim Garl is in his 33rd year as Indiana's men's basketball athletic trainer during the 2013-14 season.
Garl is a regular speaker at both national and international sports medicine programs, including numerous presentations in Asia, South America, Europe and most recently at the European Basketball Championships in Spain. He has served at several World University Games including Beijing, Palma De Mallorca Spain, Bangkok, and Izmir Turkey. In the summer he has also worked at the Pan American Games in: Winnipeg Canada, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A native of Elkhart, Ind., he served as a student athletic trainer (1975-78) for legendary football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant while completing an undergraduate degree at Alabama. In 1978, Garl was hired at Mississippi, where he served as assistant athletic trainer for all of the Rebels' men's sports. He also completed a master's degree in administration at Ole Miss and completed an MPA degree in Health Systems Management in SPEA at Indiana in 1989.
Garl has worked with numerous United States basketball teams in international competition, including the 1984 gold medal men's Olympic team and the 1982 and 1986 FIBA World Championship teams. He also assisted in the 2002 FIBA World Championships in Indianapolis. Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and Licensed by the state of Indiana, Garl has served on the United States Olympic Committees and Sports Medicine Committee. He has served since the 1988 Olympics, and was recently reappointed for another four years. He is the longest serving member on this committee.
During the summer of 1996, Garl was appointed chairman of the USOC's Olympic Sports Medicine Society, the alumni group of the USOC Medical Division, becoming the first non-physician to lead that organization. He also serves as a consultant to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Garl was recently selected to the board of directors for the College Athletic Trainers Society. Garl and his wife, Jennifer, have three daughters (Emily, Meg and Haley).
