Hoosiers Down Iowa, 71-64

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - D.J. White matched his career high in points and rebounds, as the Indiana men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive Big Ten contest with a 71-64 victory over Iowa on Tuesday, Jan. 16 on Branch McCracken Court. White had 23 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double, as IU moved to 13-4 (4-1 Big Ten) with the victory. The Hawkeyes fell to 10-8 (2-2) with the loss.
Roderick Wilmont added 15 points for the Hoosiers, following up a career-high 25 scored at Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 13, while Armon Bassett scored in double figures for the third game in a row with 10 points. Earl Calloway posted eight points, eight assists and three steals in the victory. White added a pair of blocks for the Hoosiers. Indiana shot 46 percent from the field, including a 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) effort in the second half.
The two teams traded buckets to begin the game, with Iowa holding a 10-8 lead with 14:19 to play in the half. But the Hoosier defense held the Hawkeyes scoreless for the next 7:01, and took a nine-point edge after an 11-0 run. A 3-pointer by Adam Haluska broke the string at the 7:18 mark, cutting the deficit to 19-13. Iowa was 0-for-5 from the field with four turnovers during the skein.
The Hoosiers added five more points to make the run 16-3, but the teams traded baskets the rest of the half and IU entered the break with a 29-17 lead. Indiana held the Hawks to just 7-for-22 from the field in the half and forced 10 Iowa turnovers. IU held Haluska, the Big Ten's leading scorer, to 1-for-7 shooting with five points in the frame. Indiana held the lead for remainder of the contest.
The two teams came out blazing after the break, going blow-for-blow until the 12:15 mark, when the home squad embarked on a 9-0 run. White provided the run's final seven points, scoring on three straight possessions inside and adding a free throw on the first of the three. White's final layin, at the 9:58 mark, extended the lead to a game-high 21 points for IU.
The Hawkeyes refused to fold, though, and trimmed the lead to single digits with just 52 seconds to play on an inside jumper by Tyler Smith. But Indiana hit its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the seven-point victory. IU went 11-for-15 in the second half from the free throw line.
Haluska scored 16 points in the second half to finish with a team-high 21, while Smith added 17 in a losing effort. Seth Gorney also finished in double figures with 12 points for the Hawkeyes.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when it travels to Hartford, Conn., for a non-conference matchup with Connecticut. Game time is set for 3:45 p.m. EST. The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
