Hoosiers Fall To Northwestern, 78-61
Feb. 7, 2010
EVANSTON, Ill. -Despite a career-high 28 points from sophomore Verdell Jones III, Indiana saw Northwestern jump out to an 18-4 lead in the first 6:55 and never allowed the Hoosiers to get closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Wildcats captured a 78-61 victory Sunday in Welsh Ryan Arena.
"We didn't come out with a `street fight' mentality at all to start the game," said IU Coach Tom Crean. "We just have to grow out of that and get better."
Jones, who is averaging 18.6 points per game in the Big Ten, made seven of 14 field goals and a career-high three triples along with a career-high 12 free throws. He scored 14 points in each half. In the last three games against Illinois, Purdue and Northwestern, he is averaging 24 points per game. He also added six assists.
After trailing 40-29 at halftime, Jones III came out and made a jumper to make it 40-31. Northwestern then scored the next eight points to break it open.
Sophomore John Shurna led five Northwestern players in double figures with 16 points, who hit 10 of 25 three-point attempts. Freshman Christian Watford added 16 points for IU. He also made six of eight free throws.
IU shot a season-high 85.2 percent from the free throw line making 23 of 27 from the charity stripe.
"We don't have a toughness about us that is there everyday," added Crean. "You have to have people that, when things are not going right like they didn't the last couple games that we have gotten beat, are able to bring the team together."
The Hoosiers will play the next three games against top 25 opposition. The Hoosiers will host Ohio State at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, in Assembly Hall.
