IOWA CITY, Iowa - Four Hoosiers scored in double-digits, including a double-double from freshman Cody Zeller, but it wasn't enough as the No. 18/20 Indiana men's basketball team fell at Iowa, 78-66.
Zeller and sophomore Victor Oladipo led the Hoosiers (20-7, 8-7) with 15 points apiece. Zeller also added a career-high 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Junior Derek Elston netted 13 points and senior Matt Roth scored 12 points off the bench.
"This was not going to be a game about any one individual or any two individuals carrying us in any certain way," said head coach Tom Crean. "It was going to have to be a team effort. We made a good run in the second half and cut it to ten. We were playing in shifts, we were playing in quick segments to try and get back into the game and I would like to have a couple substitutions back. But then Matt Gatens, the most determined player on the floor in my opinion the whole day anyway, took it to another level. He got extremely hot and broke our backs in the sense of coming back."
Indiana jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the game by way of Zeller, who the Hoosiers' first five points, but a 24-10 Iowa run gave the Hawkeyes 12-point lead, 30-21, with 3:03 to go in the first half. A 3-pointer from Roth cut Iowa's lead to nine, but the Hawkeyes outscored IU, 7-5 in the final 2:29 of the half to take a 37-26 lead into the break.
Iowa came out in the second half and built up a 19-point lead, but Indiana's defense kicked in and held the Hawkeyes without a basket for nearly four minutes to cut the lead to 10, 52-42, with 8:14 remaining. The first of four consecutive 3-pointers from Iowa's Matt Gatens gave the Hawkeyes an edge as they maintained at least a 12 point lead for the remainder of the game for the 78-66 win.
Zeller sank 5-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line for his 15 points and nine of 13 rebounds came off the defensive glass. He also recorded two blocks and one steal. Oladipo made 4-of-11 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line for his 15 points. He added four rebounds and one assist. Elston made 4-of-6 from the field, 2-of-3 from 3 and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for his 13 points and Roth sank a perfect 4-of-4 from 3 for 12 points.
The Hoosiers shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the field and 76.9 percent (20-of-26) from the line.
"We're not the only one who came here and walked away with an L," said Crean. "Everybody is trying to take care of home court. It's an outstanding league there is no question about it."
