Hoosiers Fall to No. 8 Boilermakers, 72-61
Feb. 23, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomores Christian Watford and Jordan Hulls, along with junior Verdell Jones III scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as #8 Purdue defeated Indiana, 72-61, Wednesday night in Assembly Hall.
"Both teams played very hard and they played very smart," said IU Coach Tom Crean. "We didn't always do that. We probably got more opportunities at the rim than we have in a long time and we didn't complete the play. They did."
Purdue jumped out to a 7-0 lead on two fadeaways by Johnson and a 3-pointer by Byrd. Indiana closed the gap to 16-14 before Moore and Byrd hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Purdue a 24-14 edge with 9 minutes left in the first half.
Indiana rallied behind a jumper from Hulls, two triples from Jones and five straight points from Watford to make it 28-27 with 4:54 to go. IU could have taken the lead, but Will Sheehee missed a jumper, and Purdue's Ryne Smith drained a 3-pointer at the other end.
Smith then got a steal and found Terone Johnson, who drained another 3-pointer to give the Boilermakers a 34-27 advantage.
Moore hit a long 2-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in the first half to give the Boilermakers a 41-31 edge at the break.
JaJuan Johnson's three-point play early in the second half put the Boilermakers up 46-33. Indiana rallied and concluded a 16-6 run on a layup by Hulls to make it 52-49 with 10:22 to go.
The Hoosiers would get no closer.
"We had five layups we didn't convert in the second half and that killed us right there," added Crean. Their two guys (Johnson and Moore) are not just All-Big Ten guys, they are All-Americans."
Watford led IU with 18 points and nine rebounds, Hulls had 15 points and Jones added 13.
Indiana will travel to #3 Ohio State for a Sunday game on CBS at 4 p.m.
