Indiana vs. New Mexico State - Postgame Notes
Indiana is now 14-0 against non-conference teams this season.
With 26 wins, the Hoosiers are tied for the 8th most in IU history with the 1981 National Championship squad.
IU is now 61-30 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers won their first NCAA Tournament game since defeating Gonzaga, 70-57, in Sacramento in 2007.
The win is the first in the NCAA Tournament for head coach Tom Crean while at Indiana. Tom Crean's last win in the NCAA Tournament was March 20, 2008 while he was the head coach at Marquette when he led the Golden Eagles to a 74-66 win over Kentucky. He is now 6-5 in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers are now 1-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament when playing as a No. 4 seed.
Indiana is 12-6 all-time in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
IU has already played two teams this season that were in the 2011 Final Four defeating Butler, 75-59, and Kentucky, 73-72.
IU improved to 8-7 away from Assembly Hall this season and 3-1 on a neutral court. In those eight wins, IU host posted an average margin of victory of 79.8 to 65.4.
The Hoosiers shot 59.3% from the field the 15th time, IU has made more than half its shots this season.
IU also made 53.8% from three-point range, the 14th time they have made more than half of their trifectas.
Both teams finished 8 of 10 from the free throw line. New Mexico State averaged a NCAA best 29.4 free throw attempts per game and IU averages 24.4 charity tosses a contest.
IU outscored NMSU 42-38 inside the paint and had a 24-8 edge in points off of turnovers. IU also had an 11-8 edge in second chance points against one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the country.
Junior Jordan Hulls erupted for 19 points in the second half and finished with 22 in the game. He mad 8 of 12 shots, and 4 of 6 from long distance. He also had three assists and three steals. It was the sixth 20-point plus effort of his career.
Junior Christian Watford had 14 points and four rebounds and made two of three long distance calls. He has scored in double figures in six straight games.
Sophomore Will Sheehey had his best effort away from Assembly Hall this season with 14 points. He made 7 of 11 field goal attempts. He is shooting 54.5% from the floor in his last three games.
Freshman Cody Zeller had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and set a NCAA Tournament record for a Big Ten player with six steals. Quinn Buckner held the previous record with five in the 1976 NCAA Championship game.
Sophomore Victor Oladipo had six points and three assists.
Freshman Remy Abell had four points and two assists in 17 minutes of action.
Junior Derek Elston also chipped in a three-pointer and senior Tom Pritchard had a putback for his two points.
The last time Indiana won in the city of Portland was Dec. 28, 1978, against Oregon by a score of 68-60.
