BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers opened the 2012-13 season with an 86-57 exhibition win over Indiana Wesleyan in Assembly Hall on Nov. 1, 2012.
In his first game since Jan. 15, 2011, Maurice Creek led Indiana with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including a pair of 3's and free throws. Creek also recorded a rebound and a blocked shot. Cody Zeller tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Christian Watford registered 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Will Sheehey netted 11 points and added five boards, and Victor Oladipo recorded 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds, to go along with three steals.
"We expected Indiana Wesleyan to be a tough aggressive team," said head coach Tom Crean. "They are extremely well coached, there is no doubt about that. That is one of the reasons why we wanted to schedule them. I believe in what they do. I like their coaches. I think they will have an outstanding year."
The Wildcats jumped out to a 22-18 lead before the Hoosiers put together a 25-8 run, by way of seven points from Creek, for a 41-30 lead at the break. Indiana locked down on defense in the second half and led by as many as 30 en route to the 86-57 win.
Indiana shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) from the floor. The Hoosiers held Indiana Wesleyan to just 16.7 percent (1-of-6) shooting from the beyond the arc in the second half after sinking 41.7 percent (5-of-12) in the first stanza. IU outrebounded the Wildcats, 44-28, and scored 23 points off of 18 IWU turnovers. The Hoosiers' bench, which was led by Creek, outscored Indiana Wesleyan, 46-13. IU also outscored IWU in the paint, 48-24.
"I thought our guys played hard, there is no question about it," added Crean. "We played 12 guys in the first half and we played 11 guys 11 minutes or more. Couldn't have drawn it up any better than that. I didn't go in with that plan, it is just the way it worked out. I thought we did a lot of good things, in the sense of moving the ball. We capitalized. We played the game extremely hard and serious the entire time when we started to make defensive changes as far as how we were playing certain things. They were very locked in."
Indiana returns to action on with its regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 9, when it plays host to Bryant in Assembly Hall at 8 p.m. ET. The game will air live on the BTN and the IU Radio Network.
