BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 1/1 Indiana men's basketball team opened the 2012-13 regular season with a 97-54 win over Bryant in front of a capacity crowd in Assembly Hall on Friday, Nov. 9.

Six Hoosiers (1-0) registered double-digit points, including a pair of double-doubles from Cody Zeller and Christian Watford. Zeller led all players with 18 points and added 10 boards for his sixth career double-double, to go along with three steals, two blocks and one assist. Watford grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with 15 points for his 13th career double-double. He added two steals, one block and one assist.

Kevin (Yogi) Ferrell tallied 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal in college debut. Remy Abell tallied 12 points off the bench, while Jeremy Hollowell recorded 12 points, two rebounds, one block and one steal in first college game. Will Sheehey netted 10 points off the bench, along with a rebound and a steal.

"You know as you're playing, it's one thing to win but it's a whole other thing to improve while you're winning and I think we improved inside the game tonight," said head coach Tom Crean. And the key is that we continue to improve inside of every game and in between those games if we want to be as good as we want to be and I thought that happened, especially on the backboards. To have two guys have double figure nights, or double-doubles I should say, but Christian (Watford) really had a triple-double because he had 10 deflections and to get his career high in boards ... I really think Derek Elston is in there sorting through jersey numbers because I'm not sure we're giving the 32 back to him if Christian is going to get his career high in that number, so we just might have to do it even though it's a little tight on him but that's okay too."

The Bulldogs (0-1) and the Hoosiers battled a tight contest in the opening eight minutes of the game. With it tied up at 15-15 at the 11:18 mark, Indiana outscored Bryant, 34-13, to take a 48-28 lead into the break. The Hoosiers opened the second stanza holding Bryant scoreless for the first three minutes and dominated through the end en route to the 97-54 win.

"Obviously we have to defend and rebound to be successful this year," said Zeller. "I thought we did fairly well throughout the game tonight. But there are certain plays here and there that we have to get better."

Zeller sank 8-of-10 from the field, while seven of his boards came on the defensive glass. Watford made 8-of-9 from the free throw line and 3-of-9 from the field, including a 3-pointer. Ferrell made 3-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Abell was a perfect 2-of-2 from the 3-point line and sank 6-of-6 from the free throw line for his 12 points. Hollowell netted 4-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. Sheehey made 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Maurice Creek netted six points on a pair of 3's in his first regular season action since Jan. 15, 2011.

The Hoosiers shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field and 85.3 percent (29-of-34) from the free throw line. Indiana outrebounded Bryant, 46-29, and held the Bulldogs to just 13.8 percent (4-of-29) from the 3-point line.

Indiana's bench outscored Bryant, 40-17 and forced the Bulldogs into committing 18 turnovers.

The Hoosiers will welcome North Dakota State to Assembly Hall on Monday, Nov. 12. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on (fee) and will air on the IU Radio Network.
