Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson Quotes

    Opening Statement:
"I think we were up 29, and that's when the game got a little sloppy. We changed our lineup today, obviously. We are looking for consistency. I thought we were consistent for a large part of the game when we didn't turn it over. D.J. (White) got 11 rebounds today, that's a positive. We scored 90 points today on 50 percent shooting, that's a positive. We out rebounded them, 43-28, that's a positive. Armon Bassett and Joey Shaw went in the starting lineup, and I thought they made us more efficient. I talked to Rod (Wilmont) yesterday about coming off the bench. (He said) `Whatever you want me to do coach. How can I help the team?' I thought his energy the first half was really important. I think it's to build on. This next week, I would much rather be in New York. This team needs to play games. We need to play games against some teams that we can build our confidence on. We play Southern Illinois, Charlotte, Western Michigan, IUPUI at Indianapolis. We have to be sharp every night. This is a killer schedule. We are going to try to get as much repetition as we can this week coupled around some days off. We are trying to figure out what this team can be good at and what we need to adjust to give some guys confidence.

    On D.J. White:
"I think the more we run stuff away from D.J., the better D.J. is. You can't run every play to D.J. We learned that from the Butler game. Every game I learn something new. The more plays we run for D.J., the less effective he is...We have a lot of guys who can make a basket. D.J. becomes a very good secondary option. Obviously, he needs to touch the ball...We are growing and learning. I think we are a better team today than we were last week."

    On Armon Bassett:
"Armon has a really good court presence. He's a freshman, but he's getting better. Look at him today. I will probably throw him out there in the next game. The Duke game is not our last game. It's important that this group takes everything that we are doing in perspective."

    Junior forward Lance Stemler
    On maintaing the lead:
"We didn't give up big runs. I thought we played them even for the last 20 minutes instead of adding to the lead. I think we did a better job of it, but we still have a ways to go."

    On Duke:
"Nine days to get ready for it is a good thing. It's motivating because in nine days we are going to Duke to play. I think it will give us that extra energy in practice to work hard. They play hard. You watch Duke play, and they are all over the court, diving, scrapping for every rebound, especially when they play at home. We need to go in there and match their intensity."

    On the loss to Butler:
"I think the loss is gone (out of our minds), but it's still a reminder of what we need to work on...I think it supplied a little more motivation."

    Senior guard Roderick Wilmont:
    On Duke:
"We have nine days to get ready for the game. We have to focus on guarding our men and being ready for it. Every game is a big game. We have experience on this team. I've been in big games at Indiana. I need to lead the younger guys like Lance and let them know how it is to play in a big game. Our guys are going to be ready, coach is going to have everything right. We need to just keep doing what we are doing and keep getting better. We will be ready to play against Duke."

    On coming off the bench:
"I've been coming off the bench for most of my career. Like coach said earlier, he told me that they would like me to come off the bench and give us that spark. I'm a basketball player, and I just want to play for Indiana and make us win. That's what I did tonight. I tried to bring a little energy off the bench. That's my role and that's what I'm going to keep doing."
