Nov. 19, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Cody Zeller led four Indiana players in double figures with a career-high 23 points and five rebounds as the Hoosiers (4-0) defeated Savannah State (1-3), 94-65, in Assembly Hall on Saturday, Nov. 19 in the second round of the Hoosier Classic.
Zeller hit 6-of-7 from the field and 11-of-13 from the foul line for Indiana. Junior Christian Watford added 19 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Sophomore Will Sheehey netted a career-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists, and senior Verdell Jones III added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in the win.
In the first half, Savannah State hit a 3-point field goal with 11:10 left in the first half to tie the game at 14-14, but the Indiana defense clamped down over the next 3:45 and went on a 13-0 run to take a 27-14 lead. The Hoosiers led by 15 points at the half and extended their lead to as many as 35 late in the game.
Watford sank 6-of-7 from the field, 2-of-2 from the 3-point line, and 5-of-5 from the free throw line for his 19 points. Sheehey made 3-of-7 from the field and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe, while Jones III sank a pair of field goals and made 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Junior Jordan Hulls continued his consecutive made free throw streak, draining a pair of technical free throws midway through the second half to run the streak to 45 dating back to last season. He ended up with six points, three assists, two steals and two boards.
Indiana shot 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the field and outscored Savannah State 35-17 at the free throw line. IU's 35 made free throws are the most under head coach Tom Crean and the most by an IU team since Jan. 8, 1997, against Minnesota (also 35). The Hoosiers scored 27 points off of 16 SSU turnovers.
IU is now 4-0 on the year and has won each game by 20 or more points, making it the first time since the 1938-39 season an Indiana team has done that.
The Hoosiers return to action on Monday, Nov. 21, when they play host to Gardner-Webb in the third game of the Hoosier Invitational in Assembly Hall. Monday's game is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET and will be aired on the Big Ten Network and the IU Radio Network.
