Dec. 2, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Led by four Hoosiers in double figures and an impressive 49 points off the bench, the Indiana men's basketball team improved to 4-2 on the young season after a convincing, 74-57, win over Charlotte (2-4) on Dec. 2 at Assembly Hall.
Led by a relentless second-half defensive effort that held Charlotte to 34 percent from the field on the night, combined with an outpouring of offense, Indiana picked up its fourth win of the young season. A.J. Ratliff (18), D.J. White (13), Earl Calloway (12) and Lance Stemler (10) all registered double-figure scoring nights for the Hoosiers, as IU shot 44 percent from the floor.
As a team, Indiana hauled in a season-high 46 rebounds, outrebounding the 49ers by 12 boards, marking the sixth straight game IU has outrebounded its opponent. White notched his fourth career double-double, as he tallied a career-best 12 rebounds to go along with his 13 points.
The Hoosiers put the game's first points on the board on their opening possession, as White hauled in an offensive rebound before dishing the ball off to senior guard Errek Suhr. Suhr, who made his first career start against the 49ers, took the ball on the far right side and hit a wide-open trey to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead.
Charlotte countered with an 8-0 run through the 15:30 mark and held a 12-8 edge before the Hoosiers reclaimed the lead with 11:41 on the clock half, as Ratliff sank a short jumper to pull IU ahead, 13-12. Ratliff struck again to tie the score at 16 with 9:14 to play in the first half before draining back-to-back threes to take a 24-18 advantage with 6:46 left in the half.
Senior guard Earl Calloway netted a three of his own at 6:20, marking Indiana's third consecutive score from beyond the arc and upping the Hoosiers' lead to 27-20. IU continued to impress offensively, going up 11 (32-21) with 4:20 remaining in the half, as Ratliff sank his fourth three-point basket of the evening.
Led by a defense that held Charlotte scoreless for over four minutes, and a deep bench that outscored the 49ers 23-0 in the first half, Indiana entered the locker room with a 36-25 halftime lead.
For the first stanza, the Hoosiers were 13-of-33 from the floor, 6-of-18 from three-point range and outrebounded the 49ers, 26-16. Ratliff led all scorers at the midway point with 16 points, including four three-pointers, to tie his career best. White led the Hoosiers with eight rebounds.
Indiana maintained its momentum and the lead in the second half, as White and Calloway led the Hoosiers on a 7-0 run with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Stemler netted his first trey of the game with 9:25 left in the game, increasing IU's lead to 52-39.
With seven minutes remaining, the Hoosiers continued to pull away, going up 59-44 thanks to consecutive three-pointers from freshman guard Armon Bassett and Calloway.
The Hoosiers claimed their largest lead of the game (20 points) with 1:05 left, as senior guard Roderick Wilmont netted a pair of free-throws to give Indiana the 74-54 edge.
Wilmont also joined White in double figures with a career-best 10 boards.
