Mount St. Mary's at Indiana - Postgame Quotes
Dec. 19, 2012
Mount St. Mary's at Indiana Postgame quotes December 19, 2012 Indiana Head Coach Tom Crean Opening Statement: "I was really proud of our team in the way that they responded. When you come off a tough loss it creates a different level of urgency in your team and we dealt with a multitude of situations- with both staff and players. We had coaches in sick bay most of the day and I think this is the first game Tim Garl has ever missed. But your team just has to keep moving forward no matter what and I thought our guys did an excellent job. We moved the ball extremely well, I thought we kept the pace moving, and I thought we got good contributions from guys that we in earlier than they normally would be. It was great to have Derek (Elston) back, it was great to have Hanner (Mosquera-Perea) get some solid minutes, I thought our top six or seven guys really, really competed at a high level, and I'm proud of the way we played. We played a team that stayed true to form: shooting a lot of threes. They lead the country in percentage of points coming from the three and they've got some guys that can really play on the perimeter. It was a good win for us."
On the high number of assists: "That was excellent; we really had great ball movement. They key for us in having great ball reversal is to get it inside early, or get it inside as we reverse it, and I thought the ball moved at an extremely high rate tonight. Twenty-seven assists is outstanding, and that's amazing to have a team shoot the fourth highest field goal percentage in school history. Seventy-five percent from the three point line can't be far behind that. But again, our ball movement triggered most of that. They were close to 60 deflections and created a lot of turnovers."
On when he knew Derek Elston was ready to play again: "We felt good about it today. Yesterday afternoon when we brought him back his energy was really good and he looked good, but the decision was made today. It probably would have been a bit of a reach to play him minutes on Saturday, but he has recovered at a good pace. It was great to have him out there."
On Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell's continued development: "He's doing a great job. He has really adhered to moving the ball and not settling for shots while still feeling comfortable shooting the ball. I wish he had hit that last three to put him in double figures. His head is up and he's got great sense. He's really been working hard defensively and at playing long stretches of minutes. He just does a fantastic job of finding people. He has been incredibly consistent in his 11 college games and his demeanor, his attitude, his improvement level, his becoming a two-way player have all been great while never getting away from being able to find the open player."
On Maurice Creek's injury: "We are sad that he is injured. You never want to see anybody hurt, but you especially don't want to see him go through hard times because he has continued to get better. We don't have a time frame on it, but we are hoping it's not very long."
On Christian Watford being assertive early: "Christian creates a lot of energy for everybody when he's making threes. It creates energy for himself, but it creates energy for his teammates too. I thought he played outstanding. He was right around double-figures in deflections but his rotations, his guarding the ball, his switching, his pick-and-roll defense, all those things were outstanding. He was really good tonight, and he's been good the last couple days, so it was good to see him have a productive night- he deserves it."
On the team's rebounding: "I think we needed to fix some technique things and I think we did a better job tonight. It's really about making the first contact. We were a lot better in a lot of areas rebounding wise, but we were especially better in our free-throw rebounding. There are a lot of things that you can constantly improve on but there are certain things that you really pinpoint, and I think keeping our feet moving on our block-outs was really important."
Indiana Player Quotes Derek Elston On how it felt to get back on the court: "It felt great to get back out there again. You can only go through so many practices before you want to actually get out there in front of a crowd and see what you can do. The standing ovation just showed that people haven't forgotten about me. It shows that I matter to this program. Sometimes when you get hurt like that and you're out for so long you feel like people forget about you. Coach Crean does a good job of keeping you involved and keeping people updated on my progress, but sometimes I feel like I'm just not out there playing and people don't remember me. But when I got back out there and I got a standing ovation that made me feel special."
On how comfortable he felt: "I felt pretty comfortable actually. I have been practicing for a little bit but I haven't really gone a full 40 minutes or full court so that part was kind of fuzzy. Conditioning wise I'm not there yet, especially on par with this team. My legs were a little woozy but once I settled down and Coach Crean told me to not try and force anything I felt just fine."
Will Sheehey How good was it to have Derek (Elston) back tonight? "Fantastic. He brings multiple things on and off the court that we appreciate. He has been working very hard to get back. I believe that he is ahead of schedule. We just want him to keep progressing."
Talk about breaking the press: "We reversed the ball. We moved it. Everyone cut well, and when you do that you break a press."
Remy Abell Talk about the energy tonight: "We wanted to come out with good energy. What happened in the past is in the past. We have to look forward to next game. We wanted to make the extra pass, move the ball, reverse it. Get the ball to the other side of the floor. Not just keep it on one side of the floor. When we did that we started getting easy buckets."
Talk about the turnovers you had tonight: "We need to take care of the ball. Make sure everybody comes to the ball. If we do that, we will be fine."
Christian Watford Talk about the game you had tonight: "My teammates did a great job of finding me. I got some wide open three's and I just knocked them down."
Talk about the momentum you had when you ended the first half: "We started getting out in transition a lot. We started to knock down some threes.
Mount St. Mary's Head Coach: Jamion Christian Thoughts on tonight's game: "That is a national championship caliber team. I really admire how they play the game of basketball. It is something that I have talked to my team about the entire year. Any coach wants their team playing unselfishly, and I think they had 28 assists tonight; it is unbelievable how they share the ball, how they play together and that is what you want your team to do. I think they really are a trademark to how guys who are used to playing basketball with 3 and 4-year guys, who play together, who really mature together and that is why I think they are tough to beat. They're really are just a great opponent. I think our kids did some good things tonight, but sometimes you're just a little out-manned."
On what his team did well tonight: "We executed our offense pretty well, considering the circumstances, great environment, you do not get chance to play in an environment like this a lot, executed offensively the game plan pretty well. Defensively, we did the same thing. We were able to keep them in the half court; we wanted to try a couple of different things. We have a young basketball team, so I really wanted to test them mentally tonight and see what we can do defensively, I know people look at the score at the scoreboard, and see that you gave up 90+ points, but that is how we play. We push it, we do not back down to anyone, so when you a play a game like that, we have be able to score 80+ points in a team that goes up and down. We were not able to do it tonight, but I think that the pace was pretty good for our guys. It was good to see them go up and down against one of the nation`s best."
Thoughts about Indiana's 20-0 run:
"They're just talented, and they go on such large runs. Because they share the ball, it is hard sometimes to stop where the bleeding is coming from because they share, they play so well together, and we just missed some shots. We missed easy shots, and in any game if you miss easy shots, with a point guard like [Jordan] Hulls and [Kevin "Yogi"] Ferrell, they are good racers and you really have to do a good job just sprinting back, and we did not do that. We lost [Christian] Watford a few times, and that was part of our gameplan, but in games like that it just take takes a 40-minute commitment to the game plan, and we just didn't do it. That is just one example."
