EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Christian Watford became the 43rd Hoosier to reach 1,000 career points after he totaled 26 points, to go along with 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the No. 13/15 Indiana men's basketball team fell at No. 16/17 Michigan State, 80-65.

Watford sank 9-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3 and the free throw line for a season-high 26 points. He is currently ranked 43rd all-time on the Indiana scoring list with 1,005 career points. He also added 10 rebounds for his ninth career double-double. Senior Verdell Jones III scored 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and added three assists and one steal. Sophomore Victor Oladipo netted 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field, to go along with six rebounds, two steals, two blocks and one assist.

"It was a very physical game," said Indiana head coach Tom Crean. "This is one of those games where it's truly going to be a learning process. Moving like this, it's going fast, so you have to learn real quick to get ready for the next step. It's a lot of tough lessons in a very tough atmosphere against a very good team."

The Hoosiers (12-1, 0-1) fell behind early, 34-16, with 5:11 to go in the first half, but battled back by way of a 38-11 run that spanned 14 minutes to take a 54-45 lead with 11:07 to go in the game. However, the Spartans (12-2, 1-0) used an 18-0 run to regain a 65-54 lead with 5:11 to go. Michigan State fought off Indiana in the final five minutes and held on for the 80-65 win.

Michigan State edged out Indiana on the glass, 33-31. The Hoosiers outscored the Spartans in second chance points, 16-12. Indiana shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from 3 and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the free throw line.

The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 31, when they play host to No. 2 Ohio State at 6 p.m. ET in Assembly Hall. Saturday's game will air on ESPN2 and on the IU Radio Network.
