Hoosiers Drop Big Ten Opener to No. 15 Wisconsin
January 6, 2004Madison, Wis. - The Indiana Hoosiers began Big Ten Conference play falling, 79-45, to the No. 15/18 Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night in front of a sold out crowd at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Hoosiers fall to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Wisconsin jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held the Hoosiers scoreless for the first four minutes. Sophomore Bracey Wright scored the first Hoosier basket after connecting on a baseline lay-up keeping the Hoosiers within reach for the next eight minutes. The Badgers then began to take charge of the game leading by as many as 24 points in the first stanza and had a 22-point advantage, 37-15 at the half.
Indiana was able to cut Wisconsin's lead to 18 points early in the second half. The Badgers then went on an explosive 16-6 run and extended its margin to 29 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the contest. The Hoosiers battled back trying to answer, going on a 7-0 run of their own, but Indiana was not able to get enough momentum as the Badgers went on to win by 34, 79-45.
The Badgers' Mike Wilkinson led all scorers with 20 points. Wisconsin had three other players in double digits with Devin Harris at 15 and Andreas Helmigk and Zach Morley each with 11.
Sophomore Sean Kline was the leading scorer for the Hoosiers with 12 points. Moye led the Hoosiers with a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Hoosiers break their four-game winning streak against ranked league opponents in the month of January. Overall, the Hoosiers move to 5-3 against ranked league opponents during January under head coach Mike Davis.
The Hoosiers' 15 points in the first half are the lowest of the Mike Davis Era and marks the fourth time this season that IU has scored less than 20 points in a half. This also marked the fourth time this season that Indiana has never led once during a contest.
The Hoosiers return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 11, when they continue Big Ten play against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich. Game time is set for 4:30p.m. and will be televised on CBS.
