Former IU All-American Eric Gordon Could Get Olympic Shot
July 17, 2009
Colorado Springs, Colo - Former Indiana University basketball All-American Eric Gordon has been added to the list of players for possible inclusion on future United States Olympic teams.
Gordon, heading into his second year with the Los Angeles Clippers, was one of the top NBA rookies this past season. The 6-3 shooting guard is among 26 promising young NBA players invited to a mini camp July 22-25 in Las Vegas.
The camp is intended to identify young players who could become Olympians.
The camp does not include the main NBA stars on the 2008 gold-medal winning team because they just finished a three-summer commitment to the national team, and USA basketball boss Jerry Colangelo decided to give them a break, should they want to play in the Olympics again.
The next competition for the U.S. is the 2010 World Championships. That team, expected to be similar if not identical to the one for the 2012 Olympics, will be picked next year.
Gordon finished his freshman season at IU leading the Big Ten in scoring and tied for 19th in the nation at 21.5 points per game. He was selected 7th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2008 NBA draft. He averaged 16.1 points as a rookie and was named the NBA Rookie of the Month for the Western Conference in January.
