ESPN.com Praises Crean Recruitment, Development of Oladipo
Aug. 15, 2014
ESPN.com's Adam Finkelstein praised Tom Crean for his recruitment and development of Victor Oladipo in his What If...Recruits Had Gone Elsewhere article. All week long, ESPN.com has been doing a series of hypothetical scenarios such as What if ... recruits had gone elsewhere?
Here is Finkelstein's assessment on What if Coach Crean had not offered a scholarship to Victor Oladipo.
So what if ...
Victor Oladipo wasn't ranked in the 2010 ESPN 100. In fact, he wasn't even ranked within the top 50 shooting guard prospects in the class. Yet, Tom Crean still offered him a scholarship and recruited him aggressively long before a strong summer put him in the top 100 conversation. Three years after he arrived on Indiana's campus, Orlando picked Oladipo with the second overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft.
Oladipo's length, athleticism, high motor and work ethic were undeniable ingredients in his rise as a prospect, but Crean deserves his due, as well. Early in his time at Indiana, he took a risk by offering and pursuing a player who had the attention of no other nationally branded programs. Crean not only got the evaluation right, but then developed Oladipo beyond anyone's expectations.
Was Oladipo bound to be better than everyone projected? Maybe, but had Crean not been the first to see it and develop it on one of the biggest stages in college basketball, Indiana wouldn't have won the Big Ten title, and Oladipo might not have gotten to shake David Stern's hand at all.
