Indiana junior Devan Dumes, a transfer from Vincennes, sat down with IUHoosiers.com to talk about a wide range of topics from why he chose the number he did to what he is looking forward to this year.
What is your favorite game/shot/moment playing basketball?
"One of my favorite moments was when I was a junior in high school and we were at the sectional game. We were down something like 10 points with three or four minutes to go and came back to get the W."
What has been the biggest adjustment you have had to make since joining the Indiana basketball program?
"Being so close to home, trying to get settled in and to try to avoid the temptation to go home every day or every weekend."
If had to list one person/place/thing that led you to Indiana, who would it be?
"Coach Crean was the main reason why I came here. Since the first day I met him and it felt like a genuine bond and that he really cared about me and really cared about my skill development. He wanted me to help this program to get back to where it was and help me at the same time so it was a very good understanding."
Before joining the Indiana basketball program, what was one word that came to mind when some one said Indiana basketball?
"Maybe Bob Knight. When I thought of Indiana basketball, I just thought of the Hoosiers and Bob Knight."
What are you looking forward to the most going into this year?
"I'm just looking forward to getting to know my teammates better and having a good season. A lot of people thing we won't be any good and I'm just ready to please the fans and be the best teammate I can and grow with these younger guys."
What do you enjoy doing when you are not playing basketball?
Who has been the biggest influence in your life so far?
"I don't really like playing video games. I'm more of a movie person. I like the old ones and the latest ones that come out. And it doesn't matter if I rent them or see them in the theater, I like to watch movies.
"My mother. She has never let me down through all the hard times or anything else, she has always been there."
If you were not playing basketball, is there another sport you thing you could play at the collegiate level?
"If I would have stuck with football in high school I think I could be playing in college now. I played quarterback...I could run if I had to but really liked to throw it."
Do you have any superstitions before practice or games?
"I really don't believe in luck. I just like to go out and play."
Why did you pick the number you did to wear at Indiana? (Dumes wears #33)
"I live on 33rd street and Carrolton in Indianapolis. So since I can't bring everyone from around there with me, I felt wearing no. 33 would bring them all with me.
