BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's and women's basketball programs opened the 2013-14 season with Hoosier Hysteria on Friday, Oct. 4.

The women's basketball team got things started with an hour-long practice at 5:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., head coach Curt Miller, his staff and the 2013-14 squad was introduced to the Hoosier faithful. After his team was introduced, Miller addressed the crowd.

"Basketball means something in Indiana," Miller said. "We have a group of young freshmen that a lot of people will see that's very, very talented and wants to build something special. They wanted to put something together all on their own. When I look at this freshman class I see a lot of players that remind me of Coach Crean's first recruiting class and I look forward to seeing what they're going to accomplish in four years."

After the men's team was introduced, a banner was raised to honor the 2013 Big Ten regular season title. Head coach Tom Crean said, "When you look at that banner and you realize that Indiana hasn't seen a new banner in 11 years, and they haven't won one outright in 20 years, you realize that you don't buy these at Wal-Mart. You have to earn them. This program earned that Big Ten Championship last year."

The event featured a three-point shootout, a shooting stars competition and a slam-dunk contest, prior to the men's team's scrimmage.

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell posted a score of 17 to beat the top female Kaila Hulls in final. Hulls posted the top score in the prelims with an 18.

Lyndsay Leikem and Taylor Wayer combined to win the shooting stars competition, scoring 40 points to narrowly top Larryn Brooks and Collin Hartman who finished with 38.

Devin Davis won the slam-dunk contest with a perfect score of 50 in the finals, defeating Hanner Mosquera-Perea, who posted a score of 46. Davis threw down a bounce pass from teammate Will Sheehey, who was midway up the north Assembly Hall bleachers. Mosquera-Perea posted a perfect score of his own in the second round, dunking two basketballs at once.

The men's team wrapped up the night with a 16-minute scrimmage. The Red team defeated the White team 40-28, getting 14 points each from Will Sheehey and Evan Gordon. The Red team was led by Jeremy Hollowell, who finished with 13.

The men's team opens the season with an October 26 exhibition game against Southern Indiana, and the women's program starts out with Georgetown (Ky.) in an exhibition competition on Oct. 29.
