The Opening Tip
The Indiana men's basketball team will begin its 108th season with an exhibition contest against NCAA II foe North Alabama. The Hoosiers, who are ranked ninth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll and AP Poll return seven lettermen, three starters and boast one of the top ten recruiting classes in the country. North Alabama returns 10 lettermen and two starters from a team which finished third in the Gulf South East. Senior guard Quinn Beckwith is their top returner after averaging 15.2 points as a junior. UNA also will play at Alabama on Monday evening.
Two-time National Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson was named the 26th head coach in Indiana University history on March 29, 2006 and enters his second year with the Hoosiers and 25th as a collegiate head coach. He has notched 16 20-plus win seasons and is 476-268 (.640). In his first year with the Cream and Crimson, Sampson's squad finished 21-11 and tied a school record by going 15-0 at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers earned their 34th NCAA Tournament bid, advanced to the second round of the West Regional after defeating Gonzaga, 70-57, in the first round, and were ranked as high as 19th in the country during the regular season.
Bobby Champagne, a 1990 graduate of South Alabama, is in his fifth year with the Lions and has a 59-55 record. Champagne was a member of Kelvin Sampson's staff at Washington State (1991-94) and at Oklahoma (1994-97).
The Hoosiers will play its second exhibition game on November 10th against Kelvin Sampson's alma mater, UNC-Pembroke. Indiana will officially open the regular season on November 12 against Chattanooga.
