Indiana Defeats Marathon Oil

Bloomington, Ind.-Indiana closed out its exhibition season with a 105-78 victory over Marathon Oil. The Hoosiers shot 60 percent from the floor and seven different players scored in double figures.
Sophomore Kirk Haston led the Hoosiers with 16 points, while senior Larry Richardson added 14. Senior Lynn Washington and sophomore Dan Fife eached scored 12 points, while senior Michael Lewis tallied 11 and both senior A.J. Guyton and sophomore Jarrad Odle totaled ten. Guyton also led the Hoosiers with eight assists while Odle pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The Hoosiers opened the second half with a 14-4 run as all five second half starters got in the act with at least one basket to help Indiana to a 64-42 lead. Haston and Washington each tallied four points during the run.
Indiana opened up a 29-point lead with 13:10 left to play in the contest as Fife connected on a three-point shot from the right arc to give the Hoosiers a 75-46 advantage. Fife increaed that lead to 31 when he hit a short jumper to give the squad an 81-50 lead with 10:56 to play.
The Hoosiers reached the century mark for the second straight exhibition game when freshman Jeffrey Newton put back a miss off of an Indiana free-throw to give the Hoosiers a 100-68 lead with 3:22 left in the game.
Marathon Oil opened the game with a 5-0 run but the Hoosiers responded with an 18-0 run of their own to take an 18-5 lead 6:16 into the contest. Guyton led the run with eight points including six straight at one point. The Hoosiers held Marathon Oil scoreless for 4:38 during the run.
Indiana opened its largest lead of the first half at the 10:03 mark when Fife drilled a three from the left side to give the Hoosiers a 29-14 lead.
The two teams traded baskets and small runs for much of the second half of the opening 20:00. Marathon Oil, fresh off of a 105-81 win over Notre Dame, closed to within six with 5:58 to play but Indiana put together a six-point run including four from Lewis to regain a double-digit margin.
