Live from Charlotte With Jarrad Odle
Last night we went to the Hornets game. Portland beat Charlotte by about ten. There were not a lot of fans at the game. Dale Davis had one huge dunk for Portland in the game Scottie Pippen did not play which was a disappointment.
We did not get a chance to talk with Kirk (Haston) after the game. But, we saw him along with our old assistant coach Dan Panaggio who is now with Portland. I spent some time with my family at the game and will see them again tonight at our game.
The Yahtzee game continued last night and (Tom) Coverdale set the new high score.
We got a very early wake-up this morning at 4:30 a.m. when the hotel needed to be evacuated because of a fire alarm. Everyone emptied out of the hotel onto the streets outside of the building. The coaches and staff did not get the same alarm up on the 19th floor so they did not receive the early wake-up call. I guess some kids pulled the alarm or pulled out a fire extinguisher which set it off. There was a wedding reception at the hotel so it may have come from that.
We got back up and had our team breakfast at 10 a.m. and then went to the arena for shootaround. The school is about 15 minutes outside of the city. The arena is fairly new as is all of their athletic facilities. It seats about 9,500.
After shootaround we got caught in a little bit of Carolina Panther football game traffic, but got back to the hotel at about 12:30 p.m.
Now is the time we relax before the game. I told Ryan (Tapak) that he better like NASCAR because that is what we are watching. It is Jeff Gordon's chance to clinch the Winston Cup and I'll spend my down time watching the race.
We have a pregame meal at 4:00 p.m. and then will go to the game at 5:45 p.m.
We practiced this morning at 9 a.m. for about an hour and half and prepared for Charlotte. We ate lunch at Assembly Hall in the I-Lounge before boarding the bus to the Indianapolis airport.
You could certainly see the difference in security at the airport with the national guard at the security check point. But, things moved along pretty well and we did not spend a lot of time waiting in line. (Tom) Coverdale and I kept busy playing a computer hand-held Yahtzee game. I of course posted the high score.
We were getting updates on the IU football game while we waiting at the airport.
We had a quick smooth flight and took another bus to the hotel in Charlotte. When we landed we heard that the football team lost. A lot of us were bummed as we all have a number of friends on the team.
We are staying right in downtown Charlotte. This is my second trip to the city, but have not been here since my junior year in high school when I came out here for an AAU tournament. It is a nice city. The Carolina Panthers stadium is one of the first things you see when you come in. We are staying right near the stadium and I think that the Panthers are at home tomorrow.
The entire team ate the restaurant at the hotel. It was a steakhouse and the Yahtzee game continued at dinner. We got some other people involved, but no one topped my score.
I am rooming with freshman Ryan Tapak.
Tonight the entire team is going to the Charlotte-Portland NBA game. It will give a us chance to see Kirk (Haston). He is still on the IR, but hopefully we will be able to meet up with him tonight or tomorrow at our game. I'm pretty sure that he is planning to come.
I am going to meet up with my family at the basketball game tonight. My mom, dad, grandparents, sister and girlfriend all drove in one van for some 12 hours to come to our game tomorrow and they are going to the Hornets game tonight.
