THE OPENING TIP
Indiana and Kentucky will meet for the 52nd time since 1924 when the squads hook up for a nationally televised game on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats lead the overall series 28-23. The Hoosiers won 70-51 last season in Bloomington and UK defeated IU 59-54 two seasons ago in Lexington. Indiana will be looking for its first win in the state of Kentucky in the series since December 20, 1988 when the Hoosiers won 75-52 in Lexington. Indiana did win the 2002 Midwest Regional in Rupp Arena defeating Duke and Kent State. The teams have met every year in the regular season since 1969. From 1991-2005, the matchup was held at a neutral site in either Indianapolis or Louisville. Indiana has a 52-33 lead in games against members of the Southeastern Conference. Last year, IU played UK and Arkansas (NCAA Tournament) and were 1-1.
BIG TEN FROSH
Freshman Tom Pritchard is the top freshman thus far in the Big Ten. He is the top rookie scorer (14.1) and rebounder (7.8) and is second in field goal percentage (59.2). Overall, he is the top offensive rebounder in the league averaging 4.1 per game. He has had 15 offensive rebounds in the last two games. Freshmen Nick Williams and Daniel Moore are the top frosh in steals (1.22) and Moore leads in assists (4.0). Fellow rookie Matt Roth is ranked fourth among freshmen in three-point field percentage (40.5)
Indiana named Tom Crean as its 28th men's basketball coach on April 2, 2008 and he is 5-4 with the Hoosiers. He came to Indiana from Marquette where he was 190-96 (66.4) in nine seasons and made five NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2003 Final Four. Crean is 2-0 against Kentucky as his Marquette teams topped the Wildcats 83-69, in the 2003 NCAA Midwest Regional Final and 74-66 in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Billy Gillispie is 24-16 in his second year with the Wildcats and 124-74 in seven years as a head coach. He is 0-1 against Indiana.
YOU LOOK FAMILIAR
The Hoosiers are 2-0 against teams that Tom Crean and his staff faced last season at Marquette. Indiana has wins over IUPUI and Chaminade. Marquette defeated Kentucky in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers will take a nine-day break for final exams before they host Northeastern on December 22 at 9 p.m.
After Saturday's game at Kentucky the Hoosiers will have played six games away from Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers didn't play their sixth game away from home last year until January 17th at Minnesota, their 16th game of the season.
