Indianapolis, Ind.- The Indiana Hoosiers dropped an 80-41 decision to the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats in the IU/UK Rivalry Game presented by the Indianapolis area Volkswagen Dealerships at the RCA Dome. The Hoosiers dropped to 4-4 overall, while the Wildcats improved to 6-0.
The Hoosiers trailed by only six points, 32-26, at the half due in large part to solid first half performances by sophomore guard Bracey Wright and sophomore forward Sean Kline. Wright had 13 first half points, while Kline had 11.
UK used a 9-0 run to start the second half. A Kline lay up at the 17:10 mark stopped the run. The Wildcats never looked back from that point holding Indiana to 15 second half points on 16.7-percent shooting from the field. For the game, the Hoosiers shot 24.2-percent from the field compared to 54.4-percent for Kentucky.
Eric Daniels and Chuck Hayes turned in career performances to lead the Wildcats. Both finished with double-doubles as Daniels finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Hayes contributed 22 and 10. Kelaenna Azybuike and Cliff Hawkins were the other two Wildcats in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
Wright led all scorers with 23 points. Kline finished with a career-high 15. Freshman forward Pat Ewing, Jr., had seven rebounds to lead Indiana on the glass. Indiana forced a season-high 20 turnovers against UK and also had a season-high 10 steals. Junior guard Ryan Tapak had three steals, while sophomore guard Marshall Strickland and Ewing both had two apiece.
Kentucky led by as many as 11 points in the first half at 16-5. Indiana cut the UK lead to five points on three different occasions in the first half, but could not get any closer.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 23, when Morehead State travels to Bloomington. The game is an 8:00 p.m. tip time and will be televised on ESPN-Regional. The match up can also be heard on the IU Radio Network with Don Fischer (p-b-p), Todd Leary (analysis) and Joe Smith (pre game, halftime, post game) on the call.
