Running back Kenni Burns saw action on special teams and as a reserve running back in four games in 2005 - Nicholls State, Kentucky, at Michigan and Purdue.

Burns saw action on the special teams unit in 10 games last season and played 41 snaps on the year with a season-high eight at Illinois.

Burns spent the 2003 season as a redshirt. Following 2004 spring drills, he garnered the Iron Man Award, for taking the most snaps during the spring.

Despite being removed from all but three games before the fourth quarter in his senior season of high school, he rushed for 2,444 yards, averaging 8.6 yards per carry, with 36 touchdowns. The CSEC Player of the Year in 2002, Burns was a first team all-state selection in every major newspaper or organization. Burns broke every major rushing record at Sacred Heart-Griffin, including career yards (4,584) and total offensive yards for a season (2,588). He played the first game of his junior year with a broken foot and still rushed for 200 yards. He had surgery the next day and did not return until the last game of the regular season, and again rushed for 200 yards. Was the first player in Illinois state high school football history to earn all-state honors as a sophomore. Burns also played basketball in high school, averaging better than 15 points and eight rebounds per game.
