Kit Cartwright is in his first season as Indiana's associate director for football operations after spending 2009 in charge of administrative quality control.
Entering his 35th season in football, Cartwright is enjoying his second stint in Bloomington. He served as passing game coordinator under IU's all-time winningest coach, Bill Mallory, in 1996.
Cartwright has worked at 13 different universities and one professional organization. He served as the head coach at Butler University from 2002-05. In total, Cartwright has worked on the football staff at four different Big Ten schools (Penn State, Purdue, Michigan and Indiana) and has served as offensive coordinator at four other Division I institutions.
He has helped seven different teams to bowl games. Cartwright was on the Penn State staff for the 1979 Sugar Bowl, which was played for the national championship, and with Bowling Green for the 1982 California Bowl. In 1984, he was with Purdue at the Peach Bowl, and then at Colorado State for the 1991 Freedom Bowl. He was with Ball State at the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl, and Michigan at the 1994 Holiday Bowl and the 1995 Alamo Bowl.
Cartwright began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Toledo before moving on to the defensive coordinator position at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1977. He then served as an assistant coach at Penn State University (1978-spring 1979), Bowling Green State University (1979-82) and Purdue University (1983-86) before being named the offensive coordinator at Eastern Illinois University (1987-88). Cartwright coached NFL Hall of Famer Rod Woodson with the Boilermakers.
He moved on as an assistant coach at Colorado State University (1989-92) before joining Ball State University as its offensive coordinator in 1993. Following his stay in Muncie, Cartwright served a two-year stint as the quarterback and receivers coach at the University of Michigan (1994-95). He helped develop five All-America performers and several players who went on to earn a spot in the NFL, including New England quarterback Tom Brady and quarterback Brian Griese.
Cartwright was the passing game coordinator at IU prior to going to Butler, where he earned a promotion to head coach after four seasons as the team's offensive coordinator. As offensive coordinator, the Bulldogs set 10 school offensive records. During the 2000 campaign, Butler eclipsed school single-season records for points scored (356), passing yards (3,233) and total offense (4,530).
Following his tenure with the Bulldogs, he joined the staff at DePauw University as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2006. Cartwright went on to the professional ranks for the first time, working as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2007 and 2008. The Blue Bombers reached the 2007 Grey Cup and Cartwright coached Eastern Division MVP Kevin Glenn.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Cartwright was a three-sport athlete at Rogers High School. He attended Bowling Green State University as a walk-on defensive back on the football team under coach Don Nehlen, who later served as head coach at West Virginia. Cartwright earned his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green in 1976, and he received his master's degree from Toledo in 1982.
Cartwright and his wife, Dawn, reside in Bloomington. They are the parents of one son, Michael, and two daughters, Kelly, and Kristy.
