Originally signed as a tight end, Todd Newman was moved to defensive line and redshirted the 2005 season.

Newman was an all-conference and all all-area tight end for head coach Tom Meaney at Bartlett High School. Newman was a two-year varsity starter, and his team won the conference championship 2002 and 2003. Newman also threw the shot put in track and was the indoor and outdoor track conference champion and sectional champion as a junior.
