Indiana Game Notes
Kellen Lewis' 59-yard touchdown run on the Hoosiers first play from scrimmage was the longest touchdown run by a Hoosier since Levron Williams broke an 80-yard run against Michigan State on Nov. 11, 2001. The run was also the third longest of Lewis' career.
It also marked the first time Indiana has scored on its first play from scrimmage since Nov. 6, 2004, at Illinois, when Matt LoVecchio connected with Jahkeen Gilmore for an 80-yard touchdown pass.
Tracy Porter's 76-yard fumble return for touchdown was the second by the Hoosiers this year. Greg Middleton had the other one against Western Michigan. Porter is now the only player in school history with fumble, interception and punt returns for touchdowns in a career. The return was the second longest fumble return for a touchdown in school history. The longest fumble return for a touchdown came on Nov. 4, 1978, by Dale Keneipp at Minnesota.
James Hardy's 37-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was his 29th career touchdown reception. He also set a school record with his 11th career 100-yard receiving game, breaking the record he held with Ernie Jones. Three of his 100-yard receiving games have come this season. It is also his eighth consecutive game with a touchdown reception, extending his record in that category.
Austin Thomas set a career high with 22 tackles in the contest. He became the first Hoosier since Alfonzo Thurman (Nov. 13, 1993 vs. Ohio State) to notch 20 tackles in a game.
Austin Starr's 40-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter tied Doug Smith's (1981-82) school record for consecutive field goals made with 10. Starr then broke the record with 3:42 left in the second quarter on a 47-yard field goal. Starr is 14-for-15 on the season, tying for fourth in single-season field goals made with 14 (Chris Gartner - 1972). He is 8-for-8 on field goals from 40-plus yards in his Hoosier career.
Indiana's three sacks in the game gives them 32 on the season, four shy of the school record of 36, set in 1991 and matched in 1993.
The Hoosiers have had the same defensive starting lineup six out of seven games this season. The lone exception was Mitchell Evans starting in the place of sophomore Austin Thomas at safety against Akron.
Sophomore running back Bryan Payton made his first career start for Indiana.
James Bailey's 63-yard kickoff return in the first quarter was his career long as well as the longest by a Hoosier this season.
Nick Polk caused the fumble returned by Porter, the second forced fumble of his career.
