BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Offensive tackle Dimitric Camiel redshirted this fall after arriving in Bloomington from Houston. Camiel was named scout team player of the week following the Penn State game.
The 6-7, 295-pounder played for head coach Corby Meekins at Westfield High School. Camiel led the team with 132 pancake blocks as a senior as Westfield captured the regional championship.
Camiel talked to IUHoosiers.com about his first year in Bloomington:
Talk about your redshirt season:
"Being a redshirt was the best thing I could have done for my career. It gave me time to catch up with the guys in front of me and it helped me in the classroom."
What is it like going through conditioning with Coach Mark Hill?
"It's hard at times, but you can see the results that come from the work. Coach Hill is a good strength coach and all the coaches work with us are as well. We really appreciate them."
What have you gained from working with Coach Hill?
"I put on about 20 pounds and went down in body fat. This redshirt year was very important."
Talk about offensive line coach Greg Frey:
"Coach Frey is a really good coach. He helps me out and talks to me a lot. He's just a great coach."
What are some benefits of redshirting?
"It helped mentally in all aspects of the game. You can lift more and it helps you learn more football since you have more time to sit down with your coaches."
How are you enjoying Bloomington?
"I love it here. I was walking to class today and thought this is why I came here. It is just beautiful."
What is your major?
How has the academic center helped you out?
"My major is criminology and I will pick up a minor."
"Having the academic center has really helped me because I am able to focus and study and there is no excuse to slip up in the classroom."
Who is your roommate?
"My roommate is Ralph Green. He is from San Antonio and in our room we have a big Texas flag, so they call us the Texas Boys."
