BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Defensive end Shawn Heffern redshirted this fall after arriving in Bloomington from Carmel (Ind.) High School. Heffern was a three-time scout team player of the week following the Northwestern, Michigan State and Penn State games.

The 6-6, 255-pounder was a 2011 Indiana Associated Press Class 5A All-State and Indiana Football Coaches Association Top 50. Heffern earned a spot on the Indianapolis Star Super Team and collected all-conference, all-county and academic all-state accolades.

He was named the Hamilton County Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. During his final campaign, he recorded 72 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one interception.

Heffern talked to IUHoosiers.com about his first year at Indiana:

    How was your redshirt season?
"It was great. I gained 15 pounds, got acclimated with school and met all the coaches."

Talk about how strength and conditioning coach Mark Hill has helped you:
"Coming in I didn't know how to do most of the lifts. I've learned so much and gotten stronger. I lost some fat and gained all muscle.

    What is your major?
"Business. I am going to get into the Kelley School of Business."

    Who are your roommates?
"I am living with Anthony Corsaro, Nick Mangieri and Nate Sudfeld. It is fun."

Talk about contributing as a scout team player in 2012:
"I knew I wasn't going to play, but I was trying to get everyone else better. At the end of the day, the scout team helps us win or lose. I tried to give everything I had."
