Quarterbacks Embracing Competition
March 29, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana quarterbacks Tre Roberson, Cameron Coffman and Nate Sudfeld each took snaps under center in 2012. The trio is embracing its competition this spring and pushing each other to be the best they can be both on and off the field.
Roberson, Coffman and Sudfeld spoke with Jeremy Gray about their relationship:
Roberson started the first two games last year before he suffered a broken leg in game two and received a medical redshirt. The redshirt sophomore completed 26-of-36 (72.2 percent) for 280 yards with a career-long 71-yard touchdown and one rushing score in the team's season-opening win over Indiana State.
He rushed for 114 yards with a career-long 50-yard TD to go along with a 39-yard touchdown before the injury in the Hoosiers victory at Massachusetts. Roberson also threw for 88 yards with one score in just over a quarter of action
Coffman started 10 games and completed 247-of-407 (60.7 percent) for 2,734 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The junior finished third on IU's single-season lists in completion percentage, fourth in passing yards, completions and attempts, sixth in passing TDs and seventh in total offense.
He ranked second in the Big Ten in passing yards per game, completions and attempts, third in passing yards, tied for third in passing scores and fourth in total offense. Coffman collected three 300-yard games (454, 348 and 315), recorded five multi-touchdown games (three twice) and posted three games with 30-plus completions and four-games with 45-plus attempts.
Sudfeld earned honorable mention BTN.com All-Big Ten Freshman team honors. He became the third true freshman quarterback in IU history to play (Tim Clifford - 1977, Tre Roberson - 2011).
The Modesto, Calif., native threw for 632 yards, completed 51-of-82 (62.2 percent) and tossed seven touchdowns with just one interception in seven games. Sudfeld was named co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week following the Ball State game.
Indiana will take Easter Weekend off and return to the field with three practices next week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
