BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Wide receiver Ricky Jones is back on the field this spring after suffering a season-ending ankle injury following Indiana's 2012 opening victory against Indiana State. The redshirt freshman caught one pass for two yards and returned one kick for 12 yards versus the Sycamores.

Jones played wide receiver and cornerback at Booker High School in Sarasota, Fla. He earned Class 4A All-State first team honors as a senior and was a three-time all-area and all-district selection.

During his final campaign, Jones collected 58 receptions for 897 yards (15.5 average) and 11 touchdowns. The 5-10, 190-pounder recorded six interceptions, returned three for scores and scored on a punt return and a blocked field goal.

Jones spoke with IUHoosiers.com's Jeremy Gray after practice:

Did the redshirt season help you as a player?
"It definitely did. All the upperclassmen helped me get used to everything. Being from Florida, it was hard to adjust to this type of environment, but they helped me out. They were like a family from day one."

How did the coaches make you feel comfortable?
"They made me understand the difference between high school and college. There was a big difference. Playing in the Big Ten after coming from a little high school down in Florida. The coaches helped me a lot."

Talk about head strength and conditioning coach Mark Hill and his staff:
"They are great. They were hard on me from day one and made me get better. I gained 10 pounds and continue to put on muscle."

What do you plan on studying?
    "Exercise science."

How is it going coming back from your injury?
"It's a long process. It's tough, but I'm on a roll and can't wait for the season."

    On his performance this spring:
"I am better than I was two weeks ago. I am getting better and better and making progress every day."
