Spring Position Preview - Cornerbacks
April 13, 2009
The biggest position switch this offseason concerns the cornerback position, as senior Ray Fisher moves over to the defense. Fisher is one of 14 Hoosiers with 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards, but has the speed and added 13 pounds of muscle in order to return to the defensive position he manned as a two-way player at Glenville High School.
A trio of young, talented corners who received their first career playing time and starts a year ago will compete for action on the field along with Fisher. Junior Richard Council and sophomores Chris Adkins and Donnell Jones combined to start 21 games in 2008.
Adkins won the starting position opposite Christopher Phillips in preseason camp, beating out Council and Jones. The Indianapolis native went on to start all 12 games and finished fifth on the team with 54 tackles, 39 solo, and added two tackles for loss, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Phillips went down with a season-ending ACL injury in the first half of the third game of the season, paving the way for Council to enter the starting lineup. Council saw action in the first three games and started the next seven before missing the final two with an ankle injury. Jones, who played in nine of the first 10 games, earned starts opposite Adkins in place of Council.
Council led the team with nine pass breakups and finished the year with 45 tackles, 39 solo. Jones made 20 tackles, 18 solo, with one interception, three pass breakups and one tackle for loss. He recorded a career-high 10 tackles, nine solo, with a pass breakup in the season finale at Purdue.
Junior Adrian Burks will battle for playing time in the fall but will miss the spring due to shoulder surgery. Additionally, Peter St. Fort is ready to compete for playing time after redshirting the 2008 campaign.
