BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Three Indiana student-athletes have been honored as the Scholar-Athlete and C.H.A.M.P.S. Champ of the Month for March. Freshmen Breanna Saucedo and Jordan Hulls were named the Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Month, while fifth-year senior Adrian Burks was the named the C.H.A.M.P.S. Champ of the Month.

Saucedo, a freshman infielder from Chino, Calif., is second on the Hoosier softball team with a .318 batting percentage and is 13-for-13 in stolen bases this season while serving as the leadoff batter for nearly the entire season.

"From the start of the semester, Breanna has been able to achieve the right balance that has allowed her to succeed in the classroom and on the softball field," IU Academic Advisor Michael Greene. "Along with being the team's starting shortstop, she is on track to start her IU academic career with her second semester with a GPA above 3.0. Based on her start, I see nothing but positives for Breanna going forward, both in the classroom and on the field."

"Bre is one of our most competitive players on the field and off, and this exemplifies that," said IU head softball coach Michelle Gardner. "She takes a lot of pride in everything that she does and is very deserving of this award. We are very proud of her and look forward to a very bright future with her in our program."

Hulls, a guard from Bloomington, started 17 of IU's 31 games his rookie season and averaged 6.4 points and led the Hoosiers with 47 made 3-pointers and a .402 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. His .402 3-point percentage was the fifth-highest in the conference overall and the best amongst conference freshmen. Hulls made 1.8 long balls per game during the Big Ten season, good for ninth-best in the league.

"Jordan Hulls exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete," Indiana academic advisor and learning specialist Marni Mooney. "He is currently carrying a substantial class load in a major he loves. He works hard every day and his instructors consistently comment on his polite and respectful classroom behavior. Jordan values the education he is receiving and is focused on working hard in basketball and achieving the highest GPA possible."

"We are proud of the effort and hard work that Jordan has put into his studies," said IU head men's basketball coach Tom Crean. "He understands the expectation we have that all of the young men in our program will make their classwork their highest priority."

Burks, a fifth-year senior cornerback from Phoenix, started the final four games at cornerback after playing in eight overall during the 2009 football season. He finished with 21 tackles, 17 solo, and one pass breakup.

"Adrian is truly a multifaceted student-athlete," Indiana Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services. "His commitment to academics, athletics, and his passion in the arts, specifically theater, is amazing. This past semester, he had a role in our campus' production of Take Me Out. Beyond his fine acting skills, Adrian has showed he is able to manage his time and is willing to do what it takes to be successful beyond what he does on the football field. I am very proud of his achievements."

"Adrian is a tremendous young man with a bright future," head football coach Bill Lynch said. "We are proud he earned this award."

The C.H.A.M.P.S. (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) CHAMP of the Month is an outstanding student that has excelled in all of the five areas of CHAMPS: service, personal and career development, and academic and athletic excellence.
