BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Athlon Sports' 2009 Big Ten College Football magazine, with Indiana senior defensive lineman Jammie Kirlew featured on the cover, is now available at bookstores and newsstands.
Athlon has tabbed two Hoosiers with preseason All-Big Ten honors. Kirlew was named to the first team, while senior linebacker Matt Mayberry earned third team honors.
Kirlew was one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award in 2008. He earned first team All-Big Ten by the conference media and second team by the league's coaches and collected honorable mention SI.com All-American honors.
The Orlando native also secured second team Rivals.com All-Big Ten and received the team's Anthony Thompson MVP Award, outstanding defensive lineman award and defensive player of the year honors. Kirlew finished the season with 10.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss, both ranked fourth on Indiana's single-season list. Additionally he was second in the Big Ten and tied for 14th nationally in sacks and third in the league and sixth nationally in tackles for loss.
Mayberry started all 12 games at middle linebacker and led the team with 89 tackles. He became the first Hoosier from the front seven to lead the team in tackles since Kyle Killion in 2005. Mayberry concluded 2008 second on the Hoosiers with five sacks for 35 yards and shared second with 8.5 tackles for loss.
The Darien, Ill., product finished 10th in the Big Ten with 7.4 tackles per game and 10th in league games only with 7.8 stops each time out. Mayberry recorded four double-digit tackle games, the last four games of the season, and tied a school record with four sacks against Central Michigan, a 2008 conference single-game high.
